1. The Gateway & The Siq (The Approach)

The journey into Petra begins at the modern town of Wadi Musa (elevation 1,027m). After passing the entrance barrier, guests descend through the Bab As-Siq before entering the Siq, a narrow, wind-eroded natural gorge 1.2 kilometers long with sheer cliffs rising up to 150 meters. The shaded corridor twists past ancient Nabatean terracotta water channels, votive niches, and carved relief sculptures, creating an atmosphere of suspense before framing the city's iconic entrance. This 1.2 kilometers is probably the one of the most anticipated walks in the world.

2. El Khazneh & The Main Valley

​

• El Khazneh (The Treasury): Emerging from the darkness of the Siq reveals Petra’s most famous facade. Carved directly into the cliff face in the 1st century BC as a royal tomb for King Aretas IV, this 40-meter-high Hellenistic masterpiece glows brilliantly in the morning sun.

• The Street of Facades & Theatre: As the canyon broadens into the central valley, guests pass dozens of Nabatean burial chambers before reaching the Theatre, a massive amphitheater carved out of the mountainside to accommodate 8,500 spectators, later expanded under Roman rule after 106 AD.

• The Royal Tombs: Towering along the East Cliff, these grand monuments include the Urn Tomb (reconfigured in 446 AD into Petra's Byzantine cathedral), the Silk Tomb (famous for its vibrant pink, ochre, and grey sandstone bands), and the multi-tiered Palace Tomb.

3. The Civic Center & Hidden Sanctuaries

• Colonnaded Street & Qasr al-Bint: The main paved Roman thoroughfare leads past ancient market plazas, the Nymphaeum, and the Qasr al-Bint, one of Petra’s few freestanding stone temple structures, dedicated to the supreme Nabatean deity Dushara.

• The Byzantine Mosaics (Petra Church): Positioned on a ridge above the main street, the 5th-century Petra Church features over 70 square meters of exceptionally preserved floor mosaics illustrating indigenous animals, seasons, and mythological figures.

• Lesser-Visited Tombs: For clients seeking quiet reflection away from main trails, our guides lead detours to the Sextius Florentinus Tomb (built for a Roman governor) and the Turkmaniyyeh Tomb, which bears Petra's longest continuous Nabatean inscription.

4. The High Places & Mountain Trails

• Ad Deir (The Monastery): Petra’s largest single monument spans 47 meters wide and 48 meters high. Carved into a high mountain ridge, it overlooks the desert expanse of Wadi Araba. It can be reached via the classic 800-step stone trail from the valley floor or via our back-door trek from Little Petra.

• High Place of Sacrifice: An ancient hilltop sanctuary featuring rock-hewn altars, drainage basins for libations, and two twin obelisks carved from the bedrock. The summit offers 360-degree views across the valley, with descent routes passing through Wadi Farasa and the colorful interior of the Roman Soldier Tomb.

• Jabal Haroun: At 1,350 meters above sea level, this is Petra’s highest peak, topped by a white-domed 14th-century mosque marking the burial site of Moses' brother, Aaron. We operate full-day expedition hikes to this sacred pilgrimage summit.
