So, on behalf of Discovery Circle Tours, we would like you to “make yourself at home” enjoy our beautiful country. We are honoured to be taking care of you.

Wildlife Viewing
Shaumarie Wildlife Reserve - A Conservation Success Story
Established in 1975 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve spans 22 square kilometers in Jordan’s Eastern Desert, near the oasis town of Azraq. The reserve was created as a protected breeding and reintroduction center for wildlife species that had disappeared from the region due to habitat destruction and hunting. Among its most notable conservation successes are the highly endangered Arabian oryx, Persian onager (wild ass), Dorcas gazelle, and houbara bustard.
A Premier Ecotourism Experience
Recently, Shaumari has undergone a significant transformation, enhancing its infrastructure to offer visitors an immersive and educational eco-tourism experience. The newly revamped visitor center, with its strikingly modernist design, provides a wealth of interactive exhibits detailing the region’s ecosystems and the biology of its most celebrated inhabitants.
Before embarking on a safari, visitors can explore special enclosures that offer close-up views of Arabian oryx, Persian onagers, Dorcas gazelles, and houbara bustards, allowing for an in-depth appreciation of these rare species.
Safari Adventure in the Reserve
One of the highlights of visiting Shaumari is its guided wildlife safari, offering a chance to experience the reserve’s wildlife in a semi-natural setting. Guests ride in special safari jeeps equipped with raised seats for optimal viewing, and expert guides provide detailed insights into the flora and fauna of the region. The guides also assist in spotting the more elusive animals, such as the skittish Persian onager, which often requires binoculars to see from a distance.
Conservation Efforts and Breeding Programs
The Arabian oryx breeding program at Shaumari has played a pivotal role in saving the species from extinction. A designated captive breeding area ensures the protection and growth of the oryx population, and visitors may even have the rare opportunity to see newborn oryx calves.
In addition, near the entrance of the reserve, a special aviary houses rescued falcons. These birds are confiscated by rangers from Gulf Arab hunters who attempt to capture them illegally. After a period of rehabilitation, the falcons are released back into the wild, reinforcing conservation efforts.
Future Reintroductions: The Return of the Ostrich
The RSCN is also developing plans to reintroduce ostriches to the reserve. Once native to the region, these birds were hunted to extinction, but conservationists hope to restore their presence as part of the area’s rich biodiversity. If successful, this reintroduction would further establish Shaumari as a model reserve for wildlife restoration in Jordan.
With its remarkable conservation achievements and engaging visitor experiences, the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve stands as a testament to Jordan’s commitment to wildlife protection and offers nature enthusiasts a truly unforgettable journey into the heart of the desert’s natural beauty.
Visitor Guidelines
Wildlife species are not harvested, consumed, displayed, sold or traded except as part of a regulated activity that ensure their utilisation is sustainable and in compliance with local, national and international law.
Observing wildlife in the Shaumarie nature reserves is a privilege that comes with the responsibility to respect and protect the environment. This policy outlines the best practices for ethical and sustainable wildlife viewing to ensure the safety of both visitors and the animals.
Respect Wildlife & Their Habitat
• Observe from a Distance: Never approach or attempt to touch the animals. Use binoculars or zoom lenses for a closer view.
• Do Not Feed Animals: Human food can be harmful and disrupt their natural foraging habits.
• Avoid Sudden Movements & Loud Noises: These can startle animals and disturb their behaviors.
• Avoid Flash Photography: Flash can distress wildlife and interfere with their natural activities.
• Do Not Disturb Nesting or Resting Areas: Some species are highly sensitive to human presence.
Follow Park Rules, Stay on Designated Paths and Respect the Guide
• Stick to Marked Trails & Viewing Areas: Prevents habitat destruction and ensures visitor safety.
• Do Not Remove Plants, Rocks, or Other Natural Objects: Leave the environment as you found it.
• Respect Protected & Restricted Zones: Certain areas may be off-limits to protect breeding grounds and sensitive ecosystems. • Do Not Litter: Carry out all trash and dispose of it in designated bins.
Keep Noise Levels Low - Listen the Guide
• Avoid Loud Talking, Music, or Shouting: Noise can scare wildlife away and disrupt their behaviours.
• Move Slowly & Calmly: Sudden movements can stress or provoke animals.
• Respect the Quiet: Maintain a peaceful environment for both wildlife and other visitors.
• Listen Carefully to Guide Instructions: If on a guided tour, follow all safety guidelines and park ranger instructions.
Be Considerate of Other Visitors
• Do Not Block Viewing Areas: Allow others to enjoy the experience.
• Follow Tour Schedules: Respect the timing of group visits to ensure everyone has an opportunity to observe wildlife.
Practice Ethical Photography
• Do Not Manipulate Wildlife for a Better Shot: Never bait or corner animals for photos.
• Avoid Flash Photography: This can disturb animals and alter their natural behaviors.
• Respect Local Guidelines on Drone Use: Many reserves prohibit drones as they disturb wildlife.
Be Environmentally Conscious
• Limit Plastic Use: Use reusable water bottles and bags to minimize plastic waste.
• Wear Appropriate Clothing: Comfortable and neutral-colored clothing helps blend into the environment.
• Bring Essentials: Water, sunscreen, and insect repellent are necessary for a safe and enjoyable visit.
Plan Your Visit Responsibly
• Visit During Optimal Viewing Times: Early morning or late afternoon are usually the best times for wildlife activity.
• Respect Local Culture: If interacting with local communities, be mindful of customs and traditions.
By following this wildlife viewing policy, visitors contribute to conservation efforts and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for themselves and future guests.

Monitoring and Evaluation - Process
We are developing informal monitoring based on our company, which is more adaptable and may be incorporated into regular activities. It enables us to evaluate our sustainability initiatives in a timely manner.
-
The first step is to define clear sustainability goals that align with the company’s overall mission. These goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). For example, we set a goal to reduce energy and paper consumption by 50% over the next year.
-
It is important to involve staff in sustainability activities. This is being accomplished through emails and through frequent team meetings where sustainability practices are discussed. Within their positions, staff members feel free to express their thoughts and views about sustainable practices.
-
Using simple tools like spreadsheets or shared documents to track progress informally. For instance, employees log their daily energy usage or waste reduction efforts in a shared file. This method allows everyone to see real-time data and encourages accountability among the team.
-
These take place on monthly basis during team meetings where employees discuss what has been working well and what challenges they face regarding sustainability efforts. This open discussion fosters a culture of continuous improvement.
-
Collecting feedback from both internal (employees) and external (customers, suppliers) stakeholders can provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of sustainability initiatives. Informal surveys or casual conversations can help gauge perceptions of the company’s sustainability efforts and identify areas for improvement.
-
Recognizing and celebrating achievements related to sustainability, this maintain motivation among employees. Acknowledging milestones—such as reaching a waste reduction target—can be done informally through shout-outs in meetings or via company newsletters.
-
Finally, maintain flexibility and change plans in response to observations made during informal monitoring. If some procedures are not producing the intended outcomes, changes should be taken immediately, without waiting for official reviews.
By implementing these steps, we can effectively monitor our sustainability processes informally while fostering an engaged staff committed to achieving environmental goals.
